Great Grandma Thelma was born and raised on the family farm near Monroe, Iowa. She played piano, baked constantly, and was locally famous for her snickerdoodles — the same cookies hugging the ice cream in Thelma’s sandwiches today. She was warm, sharp, and a little bit sassy. We try to run the company the same way.

Great Grandma Thelma’s signature recipe produced a cookie that was soft, perfectly spiced, and unmistakably snickerdoodle.
In 2012, Dereck and his mom gave that beloved cookie a new chapter – turning Grandma Thelma’s snickerdoodle into an ice cream sandwich and selling them from a pushcart at our local farmers market in Iowa. It didn’t take long to realize we had something special.
Today, we make more sandwiches in a day than we once did in a season – yet our commitment to small-batch quality hasn’t changed. Each one is thoughtfully made in our own kitchen, using time-honored recipes and carefully selected ingredients.

What began as a mother-and-son dream has grown far beyond that first farmers market, but it’s still family-led. Dereck continues to lead the company while Nola now leads the Thelma’s brand into its next chapter. The foundation was built by family, and today, over 100 Iowans help carry that legacy forward—making every sandwich with the same care that went into those first ones sold from the pushcart.
